Catch of the Day: Throwback Thursday, Vampire Edition

CATCH OF THE DAY: So far, Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries has been all about seeing double. But, in the episode "For Whom The Bell Tolls," it's also about hearing double. Songs that have played in past episodes as far back as Seasons 1 and 2 are resurrected in the episode dedicated to honoring its dead and remembering the past. Now that's what we call a Throwback Thursday.

The first song that made a reappearance was "Longest Night" by Howie Day. This song first played in Season 2 Episode 11 ("By The Light of the Moon"), when Stefan goes to see Elena after he is released from the tomb. It plays again in Season 5 Episode 4 ("For Whom The Bell Tolls") when the former couple is trying to rekindle Stefan's lost memories of their relationship. Not only does the song call back memories from the couple's past, but the lyrics also fit even better in the more recent episode:
"Are you lost, where you are?
Can you find your way when you're so far?"

"Gravity" by Sarah Bareilles originally played way back in Season 1 Episode 2 ("The Night of the Comet") during the Stefan and Elena's first kiss. In "For Whom The Bell Tolls," the same song plays when the two share another intimate moment. And, just like with "Longest Night," the lyrics for "Gravity" seem to fit just right, and probably even more so, in 5x04:

"Set me free, leave me be,
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity"

Reusing these songs recalls Stefan and Elena's past relationship, while reminding us that a lot has changed. But, you can't compel us to forget this chemistry.
